The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has urged party members and the public to remain patient amid growing concerns over the limited number of recruits being absorbed into the country’s security services.
Speaking in Dodowa in the Greater Accra Region, Mr Asiedu Nketiah said the government is prioritising economic growth as a key strategy to expand employment opportunities for Ghanaian youth.
His comments follow disclosures by the Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, that more than 105,000 applicants have qualified for the medical stage of the ongoing recruitment exercise, despite there being only 5,000 available positions.
The minister also revealed that nearly 500,000 individuals applied for positions across the country’s security agencies.
“The anger will not solve the problem,” Mr Asiedu Nketiah said. “Without sufficient resources, it is impossible to employ more than what is feasible.”
He added that resolving the situation requires time, stressing that strengthening the national economy remains the government’s immediate focus.
“Addressing these challenges requires time. The first priority is to strengthen the economy, and President Mahama is diligently working to achieve this. We are beginning to see the benefits, and a little patience will allow these efforts to create opportunities for everyone,” he stated.
Mr Asiedu Nketiah further appealed to the public to remain calm as the government works to create more employment opportunities.
“Rising impatience will not help. Let us learn to be patient. Things will improve, and this government is committed to opening up opportunities for all,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament has demanded that the Ministry of the Interior refund approximately GH¢113 million collected from applicants who were unsuccessful in the recruitment process.
