Ghanaians have taken to social media to express their outrage after the July 2024 payslip of Dr. Paul Yaw Opoku-Mensah, the Executive Secretary of the National Cathedral project, was leaked.
The controversy stems from public frustration with the stalled National Cathedral, a project initiated by the President as part of a personal vow, which has so far relied heavily on government funds.
Despite nearly eight years passing since the project began, the construction site remains mostly undeveloped, with only a large hole to show for the work done.
Many Ghanaians have sarcastically referred to it as “the most expensive hole in the world,” given the vast sums of money spent without significant progress.
The leak of Dr. Opoku-Mensah’s payslip has intensified public anger, particularly as it revealed he received GH¢29,838 for the month, even though construction has been at a standstill for over two years.
According to reports, his salary, as well as those of other members of the National Cathedral board, continues to be funded by the state, despite the lack of ongoing work at the site.
Malik Basintale, a prominent figure in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), shared the details of the payslip on social media, describing it as an unjust use of public funds.
He criticised the fact that payments are being made for what he termed “the world’s most expensive hole” and questioned why ordinary citizens are being arrested for protests while those in charge of the National Cathedral project face no consequences.
The leaked information has sparked widespread calls for greater accountability, with many Ghanaians demanding transparency over the use of taxpayer money for a project that appears to have stalled indefinitely.
The frustration comes at a time when citizens are grappling with economic hardships, making the issue of the National Cathedral’s funding even more contentious.
“PaySlip of one of the leaders of the National cathedral. He is being paid Ghc29,838 every month for being the CEO (Executive secretary) of the world’s most expensive hole. His name is Dr. Paul Yaw Opoku-Mensah. A candidate for Jail. Yet, Innocent protestors are being arrested and remanded. More soon…..”
