Senegalese international goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has partnered Afrikicks to fund the construction of three water wells, providing clean and sustainable drinking water to a mosque, a village and a school community in a targeted humanitarian effort aimed at easing persistent water challenges.

The initiative is designed to improve access to safe water in underserved communities where shortages have long affected health, education and daily life. Afrikicks said the locations of the wells were carefully selected to maximise social impact, with each site serving a distinct but critical need within the beneficiary communities.

According to the organisation, the mosque well will support worshippers’ daily prayers and hygiene needs, the village well will supply households with a dependable source of clean water, while the school well will ensure pupils and teachers have reliable access to water for drinking and sanitation, helping to improve learning conditions.

Speaking on the project, the Founder and President of Afrikicks, Oumarou Idrissa, described the partnership as a reflection of the organisation’s broader commitment to people-centred development across the continent.

“Clean water is the foundation of life, health, and education,” Oumarou Idrissa said. “This project goes beyond infrastructure. It restores dignity and gives communities the stability they need to grow. We are grateful to Edouard Mendy for using his platform to support practical solutions that change lives.”

Mendy said the initiative was driven by his desire to give back and confront one of the most basic challenges facing many African communities.

“Water is life,” he said. “When people have access to clean water, everything improves, health, education, and hope. I am proud to work with Afrikicks on a project that delivers lasting impact at the community level.”

Mendy, who currently plays for Al Ahli in the Saudi Pro League and remains a key figure in the Senegal national team, is widely admired for his achievements both on and off the field. He gained global recognition during his spell at Chelsea, where he won major honours including the UEFA Champions League and earned a reputation as one of the world’s leading goalkeepers.

At international level, he played a central role in Senegal’s historic Africa Cup of Nations triumph, further cementing his status as a national icon. Community leaders and residents in the beneficiary areas welcomed the water projects, noting that chronic water shortages had previously disrupted daily routines, worship and school attendance, particularly for women and children.

Afrikicks said the water wells form part of a wider regional programme focused on water access, education, youth empowerment and sustainable community development across Africa.

“This partnership shows what is possible when influence is matched with responsibility,” Oumarou Idrissa added. “We will continue to work with leaders, institutions, and individuals who are committed to real, measurable impact.”

The wells have since been officially handed over to the beneficiary communities and are already in active use.
