The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Medical and Dental Council, Dr Divine Ndonbi Banyubala, has urged health students to serve humanity with integrity, compassion and professionalism as they begin their careers in the health sector.
He said beyond academic excellence, the country needed health professionals who were ethical, humane and committed to improving lives.
“From nursing and midwifery to pharmacy, from public health to dentistry, from medicine to biomedical and allied health sciences, each of you has been trained for one sacred purpose — to serve humanity with dignity, integrity and respect and there could be no higher calling than this,” Dr Banyubala said at the conferment of degrees of undergraduate programmes from the College of Health Sciences at the University of Ghana.
The ceremony, which took place yesterday (February 12), had an atmosphere filled with joy and excitement, with families, friends and guardians of graduates present to celebrate with them.
Service
Dr Banyubala reminded the graduate s that they were leaving the university not simply as degree holders but as healers, scientists, advocates and guardians of human life.
The graduates
He said while competence exercised timeously saved lives, compassion truly healed, and therefore, urged them to let kindness guide their practice, integrity guard their decisions and humility shape their leadership.
He said the country continued to face health challenges, including infectious and chronic diseases, maternal and child health concerns, mental health needs and health workforce migration, adding that such challenges were invitations for creativity, innovation and leadership.
Dr Banyubala also encouraged the graduates to embrace technological advancement, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), saying, health professionals who used AI would replace those who did not, while stressing the need for careful and ethical use.
He further urged the graduates to remain lifelong learners, adapt to new knowledge and remember their purpose when faced with difficulties in their professional journey.
Congratulations
A Member of the University Council, John Dadzie Mensah, speaking on behalf of the Chancellor, congratulated the graduates for their perseverance, discipline and sacrifice.
He said their achievement was the result of collective efforts by families, faculty, administrators and funding partners, and urged them to use their education not only for personal advancement but also for service to Ghana, Africa and the world.
Mr Mensah also highlighted the university’s strategic plan, which emphasised student-centred, technology-driven and interdisciplinary learning to prepare graduates for a complex and digital global environment.
Commitment
