Seven suspects arrested over highway robbery involving Council of State member

The Ghana Police Service has arrested seven suspects believed to be involved in a highway robbery that targeted a member of the Council of State.

The robbery occurred on July 21, 2025, along the Tamale–Buipe highway.

The suspects: Rashida Yousif, Aaron Abana Basuifanga, Wilson Avasong, Mutaru Idrisu (alias Virgin), Aminu Zebrila (alias Birdman), Innusa Sumaila (alias Agenda) and Haruna Safiano, were named by the Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), COP Ms Lydia Yaako Donkor, during a press briefing at the CID headquarters in Accra on January 29, 2026.

Ms Donkor said the victim was travelling along the Tamale–Buipe highway when he was attacked by six armed men who robbed him of personal belongings, including mobile phones, cash, wristwatches, reading glasses, laptops and other items.

She added that a police operation led by the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit resulted in the arrest of the suspects and the retrieval of some stolen items, including an iPhone 7 Plus, as well as weapons such as locally manufactured shotguns and pistols.
