A tragic incident in Lagos has sparked nationwide outrage after a Nigerian man, Adetunji Opayele, popularly known as TeeJay, lost his life in a hit-and-run accident.
The driver, identified as Biola Adams-Odutayo, allegedly refused to assist him after the crash, fearing that his blood would stain her car.
TeeJay, the Co-founder and Chief Technical Officer of Bumpa, had just completed a workout at iFitness gym in Victoria Island and was cycling home when the accident occurred on March 4, 2025.
Reports indicate that he was riding along Ozumba Mbadiwe Road at approximately 10:20 PM when Biola, who was merging onto the expressway without checking for traffic, struck him.
Despite wearing full safety gear, TeeJay was knocked unconscious by the impact.
Witnesses rushed to his aid and pleaded with Biola to help transport him to the hospital, but she allegedly refused to step out of her vehicle. Her friend, when approached, reportedly stated that she didn’t want bloodstains in the car.
Instead of offering assistance, Biola, who works as a healthcare professional and holds a senior position at an insurance brokering firm, remained on a phone call for over 30 minutes while TeeJay lay motionless on the ground.
Struggling to find a way to transport him, bystanders eventually convinced an Uber driver to help, but two hospitals turned him away. Desperate, they returned to the scene and placed him in a minibus (korope), forcing Biola to accompany them in hopes that her presence would prevent further rejections.
Witnesses claim she only agreed to stay because people physically blocked her from leaving. At around 11:30 PM, TeeJay’s brother received a distressing call and rushed to the hospital, where he arrived just in time to learn that his brother had succumbed to his injuries shortly after midnight.
The devastating loss has led to widespread calls for justice, with a petition circulating online demanding accountability for those responsible. As the case gains traction, Nigerians are calling for authorities to ensure that those involved face the full force of the law.
