Singapore Celebrates Ghana’s Former President With Living Floral Tribute

President John Dramani Mahama has been honoured with a specially cultivated orchid hybrid named after him during his visit to Singapore’s National Orchid Garden.

The flower, “Vanda John Dramani Mahama,” joins the prestigious VIP Orchids collection, which celebrates visiting heads of state.

The gesture reflects Singapore’s tradition of using horticulture to foster diplomatic goodwill and cultural exchange.

President John Dramani Mahama has received a rare and symbolic honour in Singapore — a newly cultivated orchid hybrid now bears his name.

During his visit to the Singapore Botanic Gardens on August 27, the former Ghanaian leader was celebrated with the unveiling of “Vanda John Dramani Mahama,” a vibrant addition to the National Orchid Garden’s VIP Orchids collection. The tradition, reserved for distinguished global figures, is part of Singapore’s unique approach to diplomacy — one that blends nature, culture, and international friendship.

Mahama toured the gardens, signed the visitors’ book, and was briefed on the history of the site, which stands as a UNESCO World Heritage landmark. The orchid, known for its resilience and beauty, was chosen to reflect qualities admired in leadership and transformation — values that echo both Singapore’s development and Mahama’s legacy.

The floral tribute places Mahama among a select group of world leaders who have been honoured in this way, underscoring the growing ties between Ghana and Singapore and the soft power of botanical diplomacy.
