Ghanaian musician Kofi Kinaata has shared his thoughts on the music industry, expressing a preference for singing over rapping. Despite his reputation as a talented rapper, Kinaata emphasized the commercial benefits and broader appeal of singing.
“It’s better to sing than rap,” Kinaata stated in an interview on Opemsuo Radio monitored by News & Vibes.
He clarified that he hasn’t stopped rapping but pointed out the inherent advantages of singing. “Everyone knows singing commercials is more profitable than rap because rap is more like poetry. If I rap in Hausa, your response won’t be the same as if I sang in Hausa, even if you don’t understand the language. Singing gives you an upper hand.”
Kinaata encouraged other artists to learn how to sing, stressing its importance. “At a point, you might think singing isn’t nice, but the more you know, the more you realize how much you don’t know. It’s not easy to sing; not everyone can do it. Some rappers can’t sing, which is why they stick to rapping.”
He also advised artists who have the ability to both rap and sing not to limit themselves. “If you know you can rap and sing, don’t hide your singing talent. Don’t say, ‘I’ll only rap because they say I am a rapper.'”
Kofi Kinaata, known for his lyrical prowess and versatile musical skills, continues to influence the Ghanaian music scene with his insights and advice for fellow musicians.
