Six aspirants, including late MP’s widow, pick forms for NDC Ayawaso East primary

Six individuals, including the widow of the late Member of Parliament, Hajia Amina Adam, have picked nomination forms to contest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary for the Ayawaso East Constituency by-election, scheduled for March 3, 2026.

The five male aspirants are Ghana’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed; Yakubu Azindow, a previous contestant; Mohammed Ramne; Mohammed Abdul Salam; and Najib Mohammed Sani.

The NDC Greater Accra Regional Secretary, Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, who made the information available to Graphic Online, said the party would review aspirants’ details upon submission of nomination forms on January 27, 2026.

This will be followed by vetting, balloting and appeals on January 28, 2026, ahead of the primary slated for February 7, 2026.

The race to succeed the late NDC Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Mahama Naser Toure, has intensified following the party’s decision to open nominations on Saturday, January 24, 2026, for prospective aspirants to contest the primary.

Ayawaso East has remained a stronghold of the governing NDC since the inception of the Fourth Republic, consistently delivering victories for the party in both presidential and parliamentary elections.

In the 2024 parliamentary elections, the late NDC MP, Naser Toure, secured 22,139 votes, representing 70.85 per cent, while his sole challenger, Zak Rahman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), polled 9,110 votes, representing 29.15 per cent, out of a total of 31,249 valid votes.

The NPP has declared its intention to contest the by-election but is yet to indicate whether it will organise a primary to elect a new candidate or retain its 2024 parliamentary candidate, Zak Rahman. The Liberal Party of Ghana has also expressed interest in fielding a candidate for the contest.
