Meningitis is an inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord

Dr Andrews Ayim, the Deputy Director, Public Health at the Bono East Regional Directorate of Health, says all six suspected cases of meningitis recorded in the region have been confirmed negative.

He said the cases were reported between January and February 2026 at Atebubu, Yeji, and Techiman, and urged the public to remain cautious and endeavour to visit the nearest health facilities whenever they experienced abnormalities in their body systems.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview at Kintampo in the region, Dr Ayim explained that the directorate had intensified public education on meningitis for the masses to take precautionary measures.

Dr Ayim said meningitis was an inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, saying that inflammation was usually caused by either a virus, bacteria, or fungus.

He mentioned severe headache, feverish, stiff neck, vomiting, as well as sensitivity to light as some of the immediate signs and symptoms of the disease, saying that the directorate had also intensified surveillance.

In another interview, Mrs. Helen Agodzo, the Bono East Regional Deputy Director, Clinical Care of the Health Directorate, said only nine out of the 16 medical practitioners posted to the directorate had assumed duties.

She said the lack of residential accommodation remained a challenge for the directorate and appealed for support, adding that: “The doctors are ready to report, but we don’t have residential accommodation for them”.
