The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to prioritise problem-solving rather than dwelling on the shortcomings of the previous administration.
Speaking on Thursday, February 27, 2025, after the State of the Nation Address (SONA), the Effutu MP expressed disappointment with the President’s speech, which he described as a repetition of complaints rather than a blueprint for national progress.
He noted that Mahama’s mandate was to address the challenges facing the country, not to lament about the past. From his perspective, the President’s address lacked transformative policies and instead focused on criticising the previous government’s record.
Reflecting on Mahama’s past leadership, Afenyo-Markin recalled a statement the President made in 2013, when he admitted that the economy had been reduced “to the bone.” The Minority Leader argued that this was proof of Mahama’s longstanding tendency to lament about economic difficulties rather than implement effective solutions.
He also accused the President of failing to acknowledge the achievements of the previous administration. He pointed out that the Akufo-Addo government had ensured stability, consistently paid public sector workers, and introduced wage increments despite economic challenges.
According to Afenyo-Markin, Mahama’s failure to recognise these efforts undermined the credibility of his address, which, in his view, lacked any significant plans for national transformation.
The remarks highlight the continued political divide in Parliament, as the opposition scrutinises the direction of Mahama’s administration following his return to office.
