Stonebwoy, the renowned Ghanaian dancehall artist, has opened up about his frustration with the constant negativity he faces from a portion of Ghanaians, particularly on social media.
In an emotional conversation on the Afrobeats Podcast, the award-winning musician shared how a seemingly harmless moment on TikTok Live with Nigerian influencer Peller was blown out of proportion, sparking unnecessary controversy back in Ghana.
Stonebwoy referred to the situation as “heartbreaking” and expressed his belief that such negativity should have no place in Ghanaian culture as the year 2025 approaches.
He explained that the interaction with Peller was spontaneous. During a live session where he was thanking his fans, Peller unexpectedly joined the stream, and Stonebwoy, initially unsure of who it was, eventually accepted the request.
The two then enjoyed an engaging conversation, and Stonebwoy took the opportunity to joke about flying Peller to London as part of the moment.
What was meant to be a fun and positive exchange quickly turned sour as certain Ghanaians criticized the interaction on social media.
Instead of enjoying the good vibes, Stonebwoy and his team found themselves caught in a defensive mode, trying to explain the situation, which ultimately killed the momentum of the moment.
This incident is just one example of the unwarranted criticism Stonebwoy has faced from his own people. He recalled a similar experience at the Grammys, where he had introduced himself to an international star, but rather than being praised for networking, he was ridiculed by some Ghanaians.
Stonebwoy expressed his dismay over how negative narratives tend to gain more traction than positive ones, highlighting the issue within Ghana’s entertainment industry, where artists are often criticized instead of being celebrated.
He urged Ghanaians to support their own, noting that every positive achievement by Ghanaian artists helps elevate the entire country. “When we win, Ghana wins,” he said, calling for a shift in the mindset of the public to foster a more supportive environment for the country’s creatives.
