A dark cloud hangs over Bimbilla after a student of Bimbilla Senior High School lost her life during the Fire Festival celebrations on Saturday, July 5, 2025. The girl, identified only as Fatima, was fatally struck in the neck by a stray bullet, reportedly fired by a reveler during the festivities.
Fatima died on the spot, and her body was later transported to the morgue by security officers. The incident has triggered sorrow and anger within the community and beyond, especially given that authorities had issued multiple warnings against the use of firearms during the annual Bugum Chugu festival.
Despite safety advisories from the Municipal Security Council, the celebration in Bimbilla saw widespread discharges of guns and explosives. Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes as individuals flouted the caution and brandished small arms during the night’s event.
The tragedy comes just days after the Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, officially suspended this year’s Fire Festival in Tamale and surrounding areas. His decision, taken in consultation with traditional leaders and security agencies, was based on rising tensions among rival groups and aimed at preserving regional stability.
In a statement issued earlier, Ya-Na expressed concern about potential violence and urged traditional authorities to help enforce the suspension. He emphasized that while the Bugum Chugu holds deep cultural value for the people of Dagbon and beyond, peace and safety must take precedence during such volatile times.
The Fire Festival, traditionally celebrated by the Dagombas and other Northern ethnic groups, was still observed in certain communities despite the official suspension in Tamale. The unfortunate death of the student has now amplified calls for stricter enforcement of safety protocols during such events.
Residents are reeling from the shock, and security forces are expected to investigate the incident thoroughly. Meanwhile, leaders have called on communities to remain calm and work together to avoid further escalation.
