Chaos erupted at the Christian Methodist Senior High School (Chrimeto) after students launched a violent attack on teachers during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The incident, which has drawn public attention, occurred as a result of the students’ frustration with the teachers’ refusal to allow any form of cheating during the exam.
According to reports, tensions escalated after the school’s teaching staff, tasked with ensuring strict examination supervision, came under fire from the students.
What started as grumbling over the tight supervision quickly turned hostile, with students resorting to stone-throwing as they clashed with their teachers.
In an interview with TV3 monitored by News & Vibes, a teacher identified as Adanunyo recounted the alarming ordeal, revealing that he and his colleague, the Head of Department, had been warned by a student.
The warning came after they had supervised the integrated science paper, where their firm stance on examination regulations left many students dissatisfied.
Adanunyo explained that the students, displeased with the teachers’ strict enforcement of the rules, made threats against their lives.
The following day, when the police were not on duty, the students acted on their threats, throwing stones and sachets of water at the teachers.
Adanunyo and his colleagues—three permanent teachers and two service personnel—attempted to leave the premises, but were intercepted by a group of students who confronted them directly, accusing them of being overly strict and preventing cheating during the exams.
Despite the teachers’ attempts to de-escalate the situation, the students’ aggression intensified, and the school turned into a virtual war zone. The incident has sparked discussions about the pressures students face during national exams and the lengths some are willing to go to undermine academic integrity.
The authorities have yet to announce any disciplinary measures, but the school and the Ghana Education Service are expected to take serious action to address this alarming behaviour.
