At a recent gathering in the Suhum Municipality, tensions erupted as residents voiced their deep dissatisfaction with their Member of Parliament, Hon. Frank Asiedu Bekoe.
This was a community engagement meeting meant for the MP to listen and talk to his constituents.
In a striking act of protest, they handed him a container of polluted water and some bread, underscoring their frustration with ongoing water contamination issues exacerbated by illegal mining in the area.
The community’s discontent was clear when they confronted Hon. Bekoe about his strategy for addressing the severe water pollution problem.
Instead of presenting a direct solution to the contamination, the MP suggested building a turf for the community.
This proposal was met with skepticism and disappointment, as it seemed unrelated to the urgent need for clean water.
Journalist Rowland Walker, who was present at the meeting, pressed Hon. Bekoe on how he planned to resolve the water crisis, especially given the environmental harm caused by illegal mining activities.
The MP responded by clarifying that he had no involvement in illegal mining and that he consistently condemns such practices.
He promised to work towards providing the necessary resources to address the issue, including ensuring access to clean water.
Despite these statements, the frustration among residents persisted.
They expressed their frustration over the lack of concrete actions to tackle the water pollution directly affecting their health and well-being.
While they acknowledged the MP’s broader development plans, they emphasised that immediate, actionable steps to address the water contamination were their primary concern.
