On November 13, 2025, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi and Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), won a defamation case at the Supreme Court against Ghana’s Special Envoy for Reparations, Ekwow Spio-Garbrah.

The legal battle began in 2022 when Spio-Garbrah, a former Minister of Trade and Industry, filed a suit at the High Court in Kumasi seeking $10 million. He alleged that Wontumi and his media outlet, Wontumi TV/Radio, had defamed him by labeling him a “thief” prior to the 2020 general elections.

Wontumi defended himself by stating that he was merely reporting on remarks made by Inusah Fuseini, and that no malice was intended. In his argument, Wontumi highlighted that Fuseini’s statement implicated multiple political figures, not just Spio-Garbrah.

In a unanimous ruling, the Supreme Court dismissed Spio-Garbrah’s claims, finding that the statements made by Wontumi on his media platform did not constitute defamation. The decision marks a significant legal victory for the NPP chairman and underscores the court’s stance on matters of public discourse and reporting.
