Swiss technology firm has reposed confidence in the country’s economy as a safe investment destination with the establishment of its new regional support centre in Accra.

The facility was established to expand service delivery, technical support, and customer engagement across 17 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

The move marked one of the strongest signals yet from a leading global analytical instrumentation company that Ghana had emerged as a safe and competitive destination for high-value investment.

The centre will provide application expertise, technical consultations, and comprehensive instrument service support, ensuring customers receive world-class assistance that enhances operational efficiency and supports compliance with global standards and regulations.

The facility features a state-of-the-art service centre and two application laboratories, offering hands-on training, application development, and solutions tailored to the needs of industries that rely on Metrohm’s analytical technologies to ensure quality, safety, and environmental compliance.

Ghana’s stability

The Swiss Ambassador to Ghana, Simone Giger, at the facility inauguration ceremony in Accra, stated that Metrohm’s decision demonstrated trust in Ghana’s stability, innovation culture and long-term prospects.

“By selecting Accra and Ghana as a transregional hub, Metrohm is making a strong statement that Ghana is a vibrant centre of innovation and a country worthy of long-term investment.

“The beginning of an exciting new chapter in Ghana’s scientific growth and in Swiss-Ghanaian technological cooperation,” she said.

She stressed that Metrohm’s global reputation in analytical chemistry and precision instrumentation positioned it as a key partner for the country’s development.

She said the centre would bring specialised technical support closer to local laboratories and industries while enhancing the capacity of researchers, regulators and students to conduct world-class analysis in Ghana.

“This new presence will boost local capacity and empower researchers, industries and regulators to conduct world-class analysis right here in Ghana,” she added.

National development aspirations

The Ambassador stated that the investment aligned with the country’s national development aspirations, particularly in agriculture, manufacturing, environmental monitoring and public health.

She said that strengthening analytical science was essential for solving contemporary challenges and preparing for future opportunities.

“Science and technology are essential drivers of progress, and Metrohm is helping provide the tools needed to address today’s challenges and prepare for tomorrow,” she said.

Ms Giger expressed optimism that the collaboration between the private sector, government agencies and academia would deepen, creating new opportunities for innovation and economic growth across the region.

Quality infrastructure

The Director-General of the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), Professor George Agyei, said Metrohm’s entry was a direct boost to the country’s quality infrastructure.

He explained that precision instrumentation was now central to sectors such as mining, pharmaceuticals, food safety and environmental protection.

“Standards without the means to verify compliance are merely aspirations, and high-precision instruments transform those standards from paper into practice,” he said.

Prof. Agyei added that Metrohm’s presence would support the country’s ongoing reforms, including new gemstone laboratories, expanded calibration services and digital conformity systems essential for industrialisation.

Strong confidence

The Head of the Aftercare Division at the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), Charles Opoku Mensah, said Metrohm’s choice of Accra as its regional command centre reflected strong confidence in Ghana’s stability and investor-friendly climate.

He said the investment aligned with GIPC’s push for high-quality, technology-driven projects.

“Metrohm is not just supplying equipment; it is providing the backbone that will allow Ghanaian industries to meet global standards,” he said.

He said that the centre would enhance skills development and deepen collaboration with local universities and regulators.

Global experience

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Metrohm Central Africa, Andy Mathews, stated that the company would leverage its long-standing global experience to serve customers within the region.

He said by bringing advanced technical resources closer to customers, Metrohm aims to strengthen scientific infrastructure and improve data quality.

He added that Metrohm Central Africa would operate as a regional hub, working closely with distributors and partners to support laboratories in areas including pharmaceuticals, mining, food and beverage, water quality, energy, and academia.
