Members of the Akoto Royal House, together with allied families, have formally challenged a recent press release regarding the leadership of the Tanyigbe Traditional Area, disputing claims that the Tanyigbe Traditional Council has reaffirmed the authority of Togbega Kodi Adiko VI as Paramount Chief.
The rejoinder follows a report published on December, 23 2025, which stated that the Traditional Council had endorsed the legitimacy of the Paramount Chief.
However, in a statement dated 8th January 2026, representatives of the Akoto Royal House, the Etoi Kodzo family and the Kagbe family described the press statement as inaccurate and misleading.
According to the families, the assertion attributed to the Traditional Council could not have been officially made, as they contend that the Council is not properly constituted and therefore lacks the authority to issue such a statement.
They argue that the Tanyigbe Traditional Council has not been actively functioning since its inauguration, citing earlier remarks by Katamanto Togbe Etoi Kodzo II to support their position.
The rejoinder explains that, under established procedures, a Traditional Council only becomes fully operational after the Paramount Chief formally presents its members to the appropriate House of Chiefs for swearing-in, followed by gazetting by the State.
The families further note that, in the absence of sworn-in members, no Registrar has been appointed by the State, meaning official business of the Council cannot lawfully commence.
The statement also discloses that the matter of leadership in the Tanyigbe Traditional Area is currently before the courts. An appeal relating to the dispute had its first hearing at the National House of Chiefs in Kumasi on 9th December 2025.
In light of the ongoing legal process, the families have called for verification of the claims with the Volta Regional House of Chiefs to establish whether the Paramount Chief referenced in the statement is formally recognised by the statutory body.
“It is when the Council is fully constituted that its Registrar is appointed by the State and official business commences. We shall soon get there,” Katamanto Togbe Etoi Kodzo II was quoted as saying.
The rejoinder was signed by Robert Apaka on behalf of the Etoi Kodzo family and Emmanuel Kagbe for the Kagbe family.
