A 17-year-old Joel Nyarko was brutally attacked and mutilated by a mob in Domeabra, Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region. The incident unfolded following a botched robbery attempt involving Nyarko and his accomplices, who managed to escape the scene, leaving him at the mercy of irate residents.
Reports indicate that Nyarko and his associates attempted to rob a vehicle when their plan went awry, leading to a swift apprehension by local residents. In a fit of anger and without regard for legal proceedings, the mob subjected Nyarko to severe physical violence, resulting in various injuries and the gruesome act of chopping off his right ear.
Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene, recounting how one resident took it upon themselves to inflict such a severe punishment on Nyarko as a deterrent to others contemplating similar crimes.
The timely intervention of the police from the Amanfrom District Police Command prevented further escalation of the violence. Officers arrived just in time to rescue Nyarko from the mob, who were reportedly on the verge of lynching him. Despite his grievous injuries, Nyarko was immediately transported to the hospital for urgent medical attention.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack and Nyarko’s alleged involvement in criminal activities. Preliminary findings suggest Nyarko is known in the area and has been linked to ‘Sakawa’ practices—a term commonly associated with internet fraud and cybercrime in Ghana.
In response to inquiries, Nyarko claimed that he was actually a victim of robbery during the violent altercation, stating that personal belongings including his iPhone and currency were stolen amidst the chaos. Police efforts are now focused on verifying these claims and conducting a thorough inquiry into all aspects of the incident.
