Residents of Ajumako in the Central Region were jolted awake by chaos early this morning after a group of five suspected thieves attempted a robbery that ended with their getaway vehicle crashing and their sudden flight into the nearby bushes.
The group, whose identities are still unknown, reportedly stole money and a mobile phone from unsuspecting victims, targeting a local business during the early hours.
Witnesses say the robbers stormed the premises, threatened workers with weapons, and made off with cash and a mobile phone from a nearby shop.
Their escape, however, was short-lived. Driving off in a vehicle registered CR-1784-12, the robbers were soon spotted by alert residents who had witnessed their suspicious behavior.
A swift and determined pursuit ensued, with angry locals grabbing sticks and other items to chase the fleeing criminals.
The escape turned chaotic when the robbers lost control of their vehicle just a few kilometers from the scene.
According to residents, the car swerved wildly before crashing into a tree. Without hesitation, the suspects jumped out of the wrecked vehicle and bolted in different directions, disappearing into nearby bushes.
Eyewitnesses say the entire episode unfolded within minutes. One local resident, Kwame Awuah, recounted waking up to the screeching sound of tires and watching the robbers abandon the vehicle without looking back.
Another witness, a shopkeeper named Nana Serwah, confirmed that cash and a phone were taken during the swift robbery.
Despite a community-led chase and swift response from authorities, the robbers managed to evade capture. The police have since retrieved the abandoned vehicle and launched a manhunt to locate the suspects.
Inspector Kofi Boateng of the local police unit assured residents that investigations are underway. Officers are currently analyzing CCTV footage and other evidence from the crime scene, and the public is being encouraged to provide any helpful information.
While no arrests have been made yet, the community remains on high alert, hopeful that the criminals will soon be brought to justice.
