In a candid interview on Accra FM on Tuesday, 15th April 2025 monitored by News and Vibes, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), voiced his strong disapproval over the ongoing speculation regarding the party’s potential flagbearers for the 2028 presidential election.
Nketia expressed his frustration that his name, alongside others within the party, is being included in discussions about the 2028 race, deeming it premature and counterproductive.
Nketia emphasized that such conversations are divisive, potentially sowing discord among party members and distracting from the real focus — ensuring the success of President John Mahama’s government
. He stated, “Now is not the time for discussions about who will lead in 2028. We need unity and hard work, not competition that could cause division.”
The NDC General Secretary further addressed his concerns about a recently circulated list of possible presidential candidates, criticizing the order in which party members were ranked.
He specifically pointed out that Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff, had been ranked lower than some ministers, which Nketia found illogical, given that Debrah supervises those ministers. He described the list as “not credible” and “flawed.”
Nketia called on NDC supporters and political analysts to refrain from indulging in this early race talk.
Instead, he urged the focus to be on supporting the current government’s efforts to bring about tangible progress for the country. For him, unity and results are what matter most at this stage, not premature competition for 2028.
