Ranking Member of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Committee, Samuel Abdulai Jinapor, has called on Ghana’s national security authorities to intensify efforts at protecting citizens and strengthening regional security cooperation following the deadly terrorist attack on Ghanaian traders in Burkina Faso.
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Newsnight on Monday, February 16, 2026, Mr Jinapor described the incident as deeply disturbing and said it must serve as a major warning to Ghana’s security leadership.
“I believe that what has happened should be a wake-up call to the national security architects of our country to step up their efforts in first of all protecting our country, protecting its citizens, and also promoting regional security, that is West African security,” he stated.

His comments follow the terrorist attack on a group of Ghanaian traders in Titao, northern Burkina Faso, which claimed the lives of seven Ghanaians and left others injured.
The victims, mostly tomato traders and truck drivers, were reportedly travelling through the area when they were caught in the attack.
Mr Jinapor said the development highlights the growing threat of terrorism within the sub-region and the urgent need for Ghana to reinforce its security preparedness.
“What has really happened is such a disturbing development and should be a big wake-up call to Ghana’s national security architecture,” he added.
The Ranking Member stressed that Ghana cannot ignore the expanding insecurity in parts of West Africa, particularly in neighbouring Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, where extremist attacks have become frequent.
He urged the government to enhance intelligence gathering, border security, and collaboration with regional partners to prevent spillover into Ghana.
Meanwhile, government officials have since indicated that discussions are ongoing with Burkina Faso authorities to ensure the safe evacuation and repatriation of surviving victims.
