The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has strongly condemned the reported assault of acclaimed Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama, describing the incident as disturbing and unacceptable.
According to the reports, the incident resulted in injuries to Mr Mahama, including dental damage and the loss of a tooth. His uncle, who was driving at the time, is also said to have sustained injuries during the encounter.
In an open letter shared on Facebook on Sunday, March 22, Madam Gomashie expressed concern and extended her support to the artist.
“It is with deep concern and regret that I write to you, upon learning of the unfortunate incident involving your reported assault,” she stated.
She added: “On behalf of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, and in my personal capacity, I wish to express my heartfelt sympathy and solidarity with you during this difficult time.”
The Minister emphasised that such incidents raise serious concerns about safety and respect for individual rights, stressing the need for swift action.
“It is deeply troubling to hear of any circumstance that undermines your dignity and personal safety. As a nation committed to justice, human rights and the rule of law, such matters must be addressed with the seriousness they deserve,” she noted.
Madam Gomashie further disclosed that she has engaged Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Minister for the Interior, to ensure a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
“I have held discussions with the Minister for the Interior, who has assured me of his utmost support in unravelling those responsible for this cowardly act,” she revealed.
Reaffirming government’s backing, she assured Mr Mahama of continued support and protection.
“Please be assured that we stand with you; your safety, well-being, and your invaluable contributions to the creative sector remain of utmost importance to Ghana and the world,” she added.
