A 9-year-old boy has drowned in a stream at Asokore Mampong
A nine-year-old boy, Tawfiq Abdul-Halim, has been found dead in a stream between Sawaba and Asokore Mampong in the Ashanti Region. The deceased, a pupil of Mahad Islamic School, reportedly drowned while accompanying his brother on a shepherding trip.
Speaking to journalists on Friday, February 13,2026, the boy’s father, Abdul-Halim Osman, recounted the heartbreaking incident.
He said Tawfiq had gone out with his brother earlier in the day but failed to return home.
“Later in the evening, his brother came back alone and informed us that something had happened,
“We immediately reported the matter to the police and started searching for him in the stream,” he explained.
Osman added that initial efforts to retrieve the body were unsuccessful.
“We made every effort to find him that night, but we couldn’t,” he said. “It was this morning that some boys from the community went to the stream and recovered his body. We were told to take him to the police station before bringing him home.”
A resident, Abdul Jalil, who witnessed the recovery, expressed concern over recurring incidents at the same location.
“This is the fourth time in five years that children have drowned in this stream,” he revealed. “Many children come here for shepherding, and parents must keep a close watch on them to prevent further tragedies.”
Police officers later conveyed the body to the morgue for preservation and commenced investigations into the incident.
The latest tragedy comes barely a week after another drowning in the municipality, where the body of an unidentified young man was retrieved from the Aboabo drain, raising renewed concerns about safety around water bodies in the area.
