A devastating explosion on Saturday, May 18, 2024, has claimed the life of a 15-year-old boy and left 12 others injured at Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital.
The incident, which occurred around 4:00 PM, unfolded as fishermen were transporting pre-mixed fuel in gallons to their canoes along the beach.
Due to the lack of access routes from the main road to the beach, the fishermen resorted to rolling barrels of fuel on the ground. It is suspected that the fuel ignited from a nearby fish oven, causing a massive explosion. The resulting fire engulfed the area, leading to multiple casualties.
The victims of the explosion include 11 males and 5 females, among them children. Four individuals remain in critical condition and are receiving intensive medical care at the hospital. The tragic death of the 15-year-old boy has left the community in mourning, highlighting the dire need for improved safety measures and infrastructure to prevent such accidents.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with people running in all directions to escape the flames. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the site to control the blaze and transport the injured to the hospital. Despite their swift action, the explosion had already caused significant harm.
Initial reports suggest that the proximity of the fuel barrels to the fish oven was a critical factor in the explosion.
