A 31-year-old motor tricycle rider, Godfred Sugri Sobbeng, has been convicted by the Tarkwa District Court of stabbing a farmer during a domestic dispute at New Domeabra, Mile 5, Tarkwa, in the Western Region.
His sentence was, however, deferred to April 14, 2026.
Sobbeng was before the court presided over by Mrs Bernice Mensimah Ackon last Tuesday and pleaded guilty to the charge of causing unlawful harm, contrary to Section 69 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
Brief facts
According to the prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Samuel Ahiabor, the complainant, Mr Emmanuel Mensah, is a farmer and a committee chairman of New Domeabra, where both he and the accused reside.
He said that on March 4, 2026, at about 7 p.m., the accused had a misunderstanding with his wife. During the incident, he allegedly seized her mobile phone and threatened to stab her with a knife.
He added that fearing for her safety, the wife reported the matter to a community member known as Rasta, who accompanied her to the complainant’s house.
Mr Mensah, Rasta and another committee member followed the woman to the accused person’s house in an attempt to resolve the issue.
However, the prosecution said the accused refused to cooperate.
ASP Ahiabor said it was during this intervention that the complainant and his team retrieved the mobile phone from the accused and stepped out of the house with the woman.
Prosecution added that the accused followed them with a dagger and attacked the complainant from behind, inflicting a deep cut to the lower part of his back.
He said the complainant began bleeding profusely but managed to retain hold of the weapon. With the help of the two men, the knife was eventually taken from the accused.
He was rushed to the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital, where he was admitted and underwent surgery.
Later that same night, some young people in the community mobilised, arrested the accused and handed him over to the police.
The complainant was discharged on March 13, 2026, after what the prosecution described as a successful operation.
ASP Ahiabor said that during investigations, the accused admitted to the offence in his caution statement.
