A devastating traffic accident in central Mexico has left at least 21 people dead and several others injured, following a fiery multi-vehicle collision early Wednesday morning. The tragic scene unfolded on a stretch of highway connecting Cuacnopalan and Oaxaca, located in Puebla state.
Local authorities confirmed that the deadly incident involved three vehicles—a bus, a transport van, and a tanker truck. According to Puebla state official Samuel Aguilar Pala, 18 victims lost their lives at the scene, while three more succumbed to their injuries in hospital care. Several survivors are still undergoing treatment.
Preliminary details reported by Mexican media suggest the catastrophe began when a cement truck attempted to overtake another vehicle. In doing so, it crossed into the opposite lane, crashing into a passenger bus before colliding directly with a van. The force of the impact reportedly sent the truck careening into a ravine, where it caught fire and exploded.
Images and videos posted online by local journalists captured the aftermath—showing thick plumes of smoke billowing from the ravine and damaged roadside barriers ripped apart by the crash. While the footage has not been independently verified, it paints a grim picture of the incident’s scale.
This marks yet another serious road tragedy in Mexico, a country that has seen repeated fatal accidents on its highways in recent years. Only a few months earlier, dozens of lives were lost in a separate bus crash in the southern state of Tabasco.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the full cause of Wednesday’s crash and identify the victims involved.
