A tragic accident has claimed the life of a 20-year-old woman, Afia Darkowaa, widely known as Cindy, following a horrifying incident involving a runaway truck in the Kumasi suburb of Pankrono.
The disaster unfolded on Saturday, June 28, 2025, when a truck left parked by the roadside unexpectedly began to move downhill. The vehicle, which had reportedly been left idling without the handbrake engaged, picked up speed and crashed into a container shop and an adjacent restaurant.
Cindy, an apprentice at a beauty salon, had gone to assist her supervisor temporarily at the container shop. Although she was not on duty that day, she had responded to a request to help out—an unfortunate decision that turned fatal within moments of her arrival.
The driver of the truck, said to be traveling from Bosuom to Bremang, had briefly stopped to use a washroom nearby. In his absence, the truck began to roll down the sloped road, careening straight into the shop where Cindy stood.
She was killed instantly in the collision, which also caused significant damage to nearby structures.
Eyewitnesses and residents at the scene were left in shock as a viral video showed the aftermath—twisted metal, shattered wood, and people staring in disbelief at the destruction. The spot that once operated as a humble beauty shop had been reduced to wreckage.
Initial police investigations confirm that the vehicle was left with its engine running and no handbrake applied, leading to the tragic chain of events. The driver’s negligence is expected to come under intense scrutiny as the case develops.
