Two Arrested for Illegal Mining in Birim Central Municipal

Two suspects have been arrested for illegal mining activities in the Birim Central Municipal in the Eastern Region.

The arrest was effected by the Blue Water Guard and the Akim Oda Police Command on January 9, 2026.

This followed an earlier operation led by the Blue Water Guard, which resulted in the arrest of five Chinese nationals involved in illegal mining activities, Hon. Solomon Brako Kusi, the MCE of Birim Central Municipal, said in a statement.

The suspects who were actively engaging in illegal mining were handed over to the Ghana Police Service for further investigations and prosecution.

According to him, the operation targeted identified illegal mining sites that posed serious threats to water bodies, farmlands, and the environment.

During the exercise, three Changfang machines being used for illegal mining activities were traced and destroyed.

“The operation was carried out successfully without any incidents, with strong cooperation among all participating security agencies. This intervention forms part of the Municipal Assembly’s continued commitment to protecting natural resources, maintaining law and order, and ensuring compliance with environmental and mining regulations.”
