Ghana’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has revealed that the process to bring former MASLOC Chief Executive Sedina Tamakloe Attionu back into the country is reaching its final stages. The government of Ghana has been working with U.S. authorities to secure her extradition so she can serve the 10-year prison term handed down by the Accra High Court.

Dr Ayine delivered the update in Parliament on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, explaining that officials in the United States are completing the necessary legal steps before releasing her to Ghana. His clarification was meant to counter claims that the Mahama administration had made no effort to ensure her return.

According to the Attorney General, the International Cooperation Unit of his office had already followed up with the U.S. Department of Justice in September 2025 to confirm progress on the request. Feedback from Washington indicated that the extradition is moving through standard procedures and will be executed once all requirements are satisfied.

Tamakloe’s legal troubles stem from an April 2024 High Court ruling that found her guilty of causing a financial loss of GH¢90 million to the state during her time as head of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre. She was convicted on 78 counts, including stealing, conspiracy, money laundering, and violations of procurement rules. She was tried in absentia after travelling to the United States for medical reasons and failing to return.

Her former deputy, Daniel Axim, who served as MASLOC’s Chief Operating Officer, received a five-year custodial sentence after being convicted alongside her. The case originally opened in 2019 and became one of the country’s most closely watched financial crime trials.

With the extradition process nearing its end, the government expects that Tamakloe will soon be brought back to start her sentence in Ghana.
