The Union of Journalists for African Free Press, UJPLA, has welcomed the recent decision by the United Nations General Assembly to declare the transatlantic slave trade a crime against humanity.
In a statement, UJPLA commended President John Dramani Mahama for what it described as his bold initiative and determined leadership, which contributed significantly to the adoption of the landmark resolution.
The Union also praised the African Union for its strong unity and support in achieving the historic outcome.
According to UJPLA, the declaration marks an important step toward restorative justice and should serve as a catalyst for sustained global efforts, particularly among progressive movements, to address the enduring impact of slavery.
The Union further called on journalist unions and media practitioners across Africa to leverage their platforms and influence to advance the pursuit of reparative justice and promote an African renaissance.
