Two men have been convicted in a UK court for their involvement in the audacious theft of an 18-carat gold toilet, valued at £4.3 million.
The toilet, an art piece by renowned Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, was part of an exhibition in a UK museum when it was stolen.
Michael Jones and his accomplice were behind the daring heist, during which they took the 98kg golden toilet. Investigators believe the thieves likely sold the toilet or melted it down because of its significant value.
The Crown Prosecution Service highlighted that, although the theft was meticulously planned, the criminals were careless enough to leave behind a trail of evidence. Forensic evidence, CCTV footage, and phone records eventually led to their identification and conviction.
The case was complex, involving a nationwide investigation and multiple lines of inquiry.
Despite the careful planning of the crime, the evidence left behind was key in securing the conviction of the perpetrators.
