A student who tried to escape after snatching a mobile phone near the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, has been jailed for 18 months by the Tarkwa District Court Two.

The convict, 18-year-old Bright Atanga, faced charges of unlawful entry and stealing. He admitted to the offences when brought before the court presided over by Isaac Osei Asare Esq.

According to police prosecutors, the case began on April 14, 2025, when officers received a call that a mob was attacking Atanga at Nkamponase, close to the UMaT campus. Police quickly intervened, rescuing him and taking him to the hospital before escorting him to the station.

Investigations revealed that Atanga had forcefully taken a phone from a UMaT student and was being chased when he scaled a fence wall into the compound of a resident, Samuel Dontoh. It was there that a mob caught and assaulted him before police arrived.

During questioning, Atanga confessed to the theft and admitted the stolen phone had been taken from him by the crowd.

The court, after considering his guilty plea and the facts, sentenced him to 18 months in prison.
