UN Chief Engages Mahama over Ghana’s Political, Security, and Economic Situation

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has engaged the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, about the West African country’s state of affairs.

The meeting took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where the 39th Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union is currently ongoing.

A statement, the UN said they discussed Ghana’s political, security, and economic situation, including efforts to sustain democratic stability, advance constitutional reform, and consolidate economic recovery.

They also underscored the importance of addressing cross-border security risks and strengthening regional cooperation.

The Secretary-General commended Ghana’s leadership in regional diplomacy and mediation amid evolving dynamics in the Sahel.

He reaffirmed the United Nations’ continued support for Ghana’s peacebuilding, development, and stabilisation efforts.

President Mahama, who is leading a number of engagements for the Union, including Reparations, Gender and Financial Inclusion, will co-host a number of high-level side events during the period of the Summit.

He will also host a breakfast event on Saturday on the Accra Reset initiative dubbed ‘Addis Reckoning’.

President Mahama is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with other African Leaders and heads of multilateral organisations, and participate in an Italy- African Forum.

He is joined by First Lady Lordina Dramani Mahama, who will attend the Summit of the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD).

President Mahama and the First Lady will return to Accra on Monday, February 16, 2026.
