A six-year-old girl has drowned at Sonitra, a suburb of Kpetoe in the Volta Region.

The incident happened on February 1, 2026, when the victim, in the company of other kids, had gone to wash their clothes at a pond-like water body used for irrigation purposes, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) reported in a statement issued on Monday.

It said a rescue team under the leadership of ASTNO David Dzakah, mobilised and conducted a search and rescue operation, retrieving the child’s body.

However, all efforts to resuscitate her proved unsuccessful.

“The deceased body was subsequently handed over to the Police at the scene for preservation and further investigation.”

Extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the Service advised parents and guardians to ensure that children do not visit or engage in activities around ponds, irrigation sites, and other open water bodies without adult supervision.
