V/R: Wildlife Division Resource Guard Shot Dead on Duty

A Wildlife Division Resource Guard has been shot dead by a poacher while on night duty.

Identified as Raphael Ganyo, the 28-year-old stationed at Kalakpa Resource Reserve was said to be among a patrol team responding to a suspected poaching incident near the boundary of the Reserve on January 6, 2026.

“During the operation, Mr Ganyo was reported to have been shot in the chest region by the poacher and was pronounced dead at the scene,” a statement by the Commission reported.

It said it was working with the Ghana Police Service to identify and apprehend the perpetrator.

In its statement, the Forestry Commission condemned the incident and extended its commiseration to the bereaved family.

“The Forestry Commission extends its deepest condolences to the family, colleagues, and loved ones of Mr Raphael Ganyo. He died in the line of duty while protecting Ghana’s natural heritage.”
