Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to provide relief and compensation to victims of the 2023 Akosombo Dam spillage.
Speaking at the 2026 Torsogbeza Festival held in Sokpoe in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region, she acknowledged the continued hardships faced by affected communities due to delays in the compensation process.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang assured residents that steps are being taken to resolve the challenges and expedite support. She, however, urged victims to comply with all verification procedures, noting that although the processes may be tedious, they are necessary to ensure that only genuine beneficiaries receive compensation.
Earlier, the Paramount Chief of the Sokpoe Traditional Area, Togbega Kadzi Zogah II, appealed to government to urgently assist victims, stressing that many remain in distress months after the disaster. He also called for additional support to improve infrastructure, including the completion of a community health centre and provision of a bus for the traditional council.
In response, the Vice President said the requests have been duly noted and will be considered as part of government’s broader development agenda.
The festival showcased the rich cultural heritage of the people of Sokpoe, with colourful displays of traditional attire, music and customs.
As part of the celebrations, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang was enstooled as Mama Torsogbeza I, the Development Queen of the area, in recognition of her commitment to community development and support for the people.
