Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang assured of government’s support to lands ministry
The Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s land and water resources to boost agricultural production and reduce the country’s dependence on food imports.
Speaking after a briefing by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources on January 27, 2026, the Vice President expressed satisfaction with the ongoing collaboration between the lands and agriculture sectors, stressing the importance of a reliable water supply for farming activities.

“I’m happy that you are working with the agriculture sector to ensure that we have water as often as we need it,” she said.
Highlighting Ghana’s favorable climate, the Vice President argued that the country should be able to produce most of the food it consumes locally.
“We live in the tropics. Almost everything grows here. At the very least, our food should grow here. We shouldn’t live in the tropics and import the majority of our food,” she stated.
While acknowledging diverse food preferences, Professor Opoku-Agyemang emphasised that access to locally produced staple foods must not be compromised.
“If you want to eat something else, that’s okay; I will not take it away from you. But those of us who want to eat the ordinary food should not be deprived as a result,” she noted.
She assured stakeholders of the government’s readiness to work closely with all relevant sectors to achieve food security and promote sustainable land use.
