Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has urged officials at the Ministry of Roads and Highways to ensure that ongoing road projects, particularly the expansion of the Accra–Tema Motorway, are completed without unnecessary delays.
She made the call during a visit to the ministry, where she acknowledged growing public frustration over traffic congestion and road conditions, while stressing the need for urgency in addressing administrative and operational bottlenecks that could slow the pace of work.
“The president himself has explained that the entire country is like a construction site, which is what it is. But that is also asking for our patience at another level in our levels of tolerance and ensuring that finally we can get to where we need to be,” she said.
According to the Vice President, while the public expects rapid improvements in road infrastructure, government officials must also ensure that decisions and processes within the sector are handled swiftly to prevent avoidable delays.
“Yes, we are aware that we wanted the road to be fixed yesterday, not even tomorrow or today. So the pressure is very high on you. I want to urge that whatever we can do today, let’s do it today,” she added.
Her remarks come as expansion works on the Accra–Tema Motorway continue, a major infrastructure project aimed at easing congestion along one of the country’s busiest transport corridors linking Accra to the Tema industrial enclave.
The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has meanwhile warned motorists to brace for longer travel times, particularly along the N1–N4 Highway, as construction progresses.
According to the minister, traffic disruptions are unavoidable during certain phases of the project, especially when engineers are installing heavy bridge beams that require safety precautions, including traffic diversions.
A temporary traffic management plan introduced earlier this week led to heavy congestion along the corridor, prompting the ministry to suspend the diversion arrangement temporarily while authorities review the strategy.
Mr Agbodza said the review is intended to strike a balance between ensuring the safety of motorists and reducing the inconvenience caused by the ongoing construction works.
