Tensions escalated on Kumasi-based radio station Oyerepa FM’s social issues program Auntie Naa Oyerepa Afutuo as a man adamantly refused to engage, citing concerns over the station’s handling of his case.
In a heated exchange, he insisted that Oyerepa FM was not the appropriate institution to address his grievances and warned of legal action if the media crossed his boundaries again.
The incident unfolded during the live broadcast of Oyerepa FM’s renowned social issues program, which tackles pressing societal matters. The man, whose identity remains undisclosed, expressed his frustration with the station’s approach to addressing sensitive issues, particularly his own.
He asked the caller from Oyerepa if he was a police man to make enquiries about his missing nephew or niece. He insulted the caller mercilessly.
This confrontation comes in the wake of a previous warning issued by the National Media Commission (NMC) in November last year. The NMC cautioned Oyerepa FM against compelling individuals to participate in their social issues program, which is broadcasted on both radio and television platforms.
The NMC’s warning underscored the importance of ethical journalism practices and respect for individuals’ rights to privacy and consent. It called upon media houses to exercise caution and sensitivity when addressing social issues that involve private individuals.
Oyerepa FM has yet to respond publicly to the recent incident or the threat of legal action from the aggrieved man. However, it has reignited discussions about media ethics and the responsibilities of broadcasters in handling sensitive matters.
