Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has urged party members to desist from clamoring for specific individuals to become running mates, asserting that it is not anyone’s entitlement.
In a candid statement on Joy News monitored by News & Vibes, Boadu criticized the noise surrounding the selection of running mate by Vice president Mahamudu Bawumia, stating that such debates only lead to unnecessary discord within the party.
“Like I said, it is nobody’s right to be become a running mate. If you want to be a president, contest, we open nominations so this noise about I should have it, I should not have it and creating all sort of challenges, I think that thing must be stopped.”
He highlighted the prerogative of the flagbearer to choose a running mate, a tradition observed over the years.
However, Boadu noted that the National Council retains the authority to veto the selection if necessary. According to him, in 2008, it was done 4 times.
He added that ,”In terms of equation, Bawumia was nowhere near who we wanted to be a running at that time.”
Boadu’s remarks come amidst speculation and lobbying within the party regarding potential running mates for the upcoming elections.
