Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has directed an immediate investigation into a disturbing incident where personnel of the Ghana Immigration Service were allegedly seen assaulting a woman in a viral video.
The incident allegedly occurred near the Aflao Border, and was brought to the attention of the House by the Member of Parliament for the area.
The video footage shows immigration personnel allegedly physically harassing and intimidating the woman, sparking widespread outrage and calls for action.
In response, Speaker Bagbin has instructed the appropriate authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and report back to Parliament.
The incident has sparked concerns about human rights violations and the conduct of security personnel in Ghana. The investigation is expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
The Ghana Immigration Service has yet to comment on the incident, but human rights groups and citizens are eagerly awaiting the outcome of the investigation.
Social media users reacted to the video;
“I hope they are found and Justice is served. Of late some officers take laws into their hands and be doing anything they want. It’s high time they need to understand no one is above the law,” wrote one user.
However, some users pointed out that the woman was holding a cutlass in the video, and questioned whether the officers’ actions were justified. “Get your information right before you conclude anything. Nothing shows the woman was being assaulted. She was rather aggressive,” wrote another user.
Others shared their own experiences with immigration officers, describing them as “a nuisance” and calling for accountability. “That’s what they do. One immigration officer almost beat my brother up about a month ago. Their mostly Asantes; No need for investigation The man needs to be imprisoned,” wrote a third user.
Some users cautioned against jumping to conclusions, noting that the video did not show the full context of the incident. “Captions can truly cause a lot of harm. I watched the video waiting for the ‘assaulting’ part. Replayed the video again and noticed the officer disarmed the woman (she had a cutlass). Didn’t get where the gunshot came from though,” wrote a fourth user.
