Tensions are brewing at the Dome Market as a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), known as ‘Nana Addo Maame’, publicly declares her intention to vote against the party in the upcoming elections following the government’s seizure of her 500 gallons of cooking oil at the border.
The aggrieved trader, affectionately referred to as ‘Nana Addo Maame’ due to her unwavering support for the NPP, voiced her discontent over what she perceives as unjust treatment by the government.
According to her, under the previous administration led by John Dramani Mahama, she paid a mere 12 cedis as duty on the cooking oil purchased.
However, since the assumption of the NPP government under President Nana Akufo-Addo, the duty has skyrocketed to 200 cedis, significantly impacting her business operations.
Speaking passionately to reporters, ‘Nana Addo Maame’ expressed her frustration at the drastic increase in duty fees imposed by the current government, emphasizing the financial strain it has placed on her livelihood.
She lamented the loss of her 500 gallons of cooking oil at the border, which she claims was seized by government officials, further exacerbating her hardships as a trader.
Her decision to openly oppose the NPP in the upcoming elections underscores the deep-seated grievances among some members of the party’s support base, particularly those directly affected by government policies and actions. ‘Nana Addo Maame’s’ bold stance serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of addressing the concerns of grassroots supporters and ensuring that policies are implemented with sensitivity to their needs and livelihoods.
