A video has surfaced online showing a young man deliberately tearing down several campaign posters of the NPP flagbearer and Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. The video has ignited a firestorm of reactions on social media, with users expressing a wide range of opinions on the incident.
In the video, the young man is seen methodically ripping down the posters, which were prominently displayed along a street in Kasoa. This act of vandalism has been met with strong condemnation and heated debate among Ghanaians online.
One user commented, “If they arrest this guy today naa then you’ll see some kwasiafo with their nonsense shouting.” Another remarked, “That’s destruction of property unless those walls belong to him. He should be arrested and tried before the court.”
The incident also drew comparisons to the lifestyles of political figures’ children, with one user noting, “John Mahama’s son is in Wembley stadium watching the Champions League final while the poor man’s son is walking on the streets of Kasoa fooling around without achieving anything.”
The video has further polarized opinions on political expression and the right to protest. While some users defended the young man’s actions as a form of political dissent, others were quick to criticize the destruction of property.
“So what if he is arrested? Everyone wants to do any nonsense for TikTok content,” one user commented. Meanwhile, another stated, “I’m a staunch member of the NDC and I support John Mahama’s candidacy 100%, but I condemn this act in no uncertain terms. It’s democracy and everyone has the right to campaign and sell their policies for Ghanaians to decide. This isn’t right no matter who it’s done against.”
Others saw the incident as a symptom of broader political frustrations. “Ghanaians need to understand the rot both NPP and NDC have caused us. If we line up the current and past presidents for the last 30 years, picking the best is more complex than calculus,” one user lamented.
Mahamudu Bawumia (born 7 October 1963) is a Ghanaian economist and former banker who currently serves as the 5th Vice President of Ghana in the 4th Ghanaian Republic. He assumed office on 7 January 2017.
Before entering politics, Bawumia held the position of Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana. His political career began in 2008 when he was nominated as the vice presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), running alongside presidential candidate Nana Akufo-Addo. He continued in this role for the 2012 general elections.
As he looks ahead, Bawumia is seeking to become Ghana’s next president in the 2024 elections.
