A high-level delegation from Explorco, the commercial subsidiary of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), has held series of engagements with residents of Yendi and Tamale as part of an onshore drilling campaign.
The delegation was led by the Deputy Managing Director (DMD) for Technical Division, Abdul-Mumin Abukari Iddris, who represented the Managing Director, Samuel Opoku Arthur.
The delegation visited the Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi, where the king was briefed on progress of the Voltaian Basin Project (GH-VB-01), and how they were solidifying operational logistics with key state agencies.
Road to drilling
Mr Iddris said that Explorco had mobilised a dedicated project management team (PMT) to oversee the next phase of the campaign from preparatory studies to active field operations.
He informed the Ya-Na that the region would soon see a significant increase in activity, including the mobilisation of additional personnel and heavy equipment, as the company prepared to drill its first exploration well in the basin.
Prior to the royal visit, the Explorco team held sessions with the Lands Commission and the Minerals Commission.
The discussions focused on streamlining legal processes for securing site locations for drilling rigs and base camp setups.
It was also to identify access roads to ensure the safe and efficient transportation of machinery while minimising disruption to local residents and farmlands.
Commitment
Mr Iddris further said that the company was committed to a “Ghanaians-first” strategy which fed directly into local content and social performance policies guiding the company’s operations.
“Our presence in Yendi ensures that traditional authorities and regulatory bodies are fully aligned with our roadmap.
“By integrating local expertise and ensuring transparent land acquisition, we are building a project that benefits both the national economy and the local community,” he added.
Contribution
The Explorco team also made a donation towards the ongoing works on a new Gbewaa Palace.
“This contribution to the new palace project is a tangible expression of Explorco’s commitment to community development and a testament to our belief that corporate success is inseparable from the prosperity of our host regions.
“We recognise the Gbewaa Palace as more than just a seat of authority; it is a vital catalyst for social cohesion and regional advancement.
By supporting this landmark infrastructure, we are investing in the heart of Dagbon’s heritage, ensuring that a modernised traditional centre serves as the foundation for the unity and stability necessary to drive sustained economic growth throughout the kingdom,” Mr Iddris added.
Background
The Voltaian Basin Project is Ghana’s flagship onshore frontier, spanning approximately one-third of the country’s landmass.
As Explorco enters the high-activity phase under its new project management framework, it remains a cornerstone of the nation’s strategy for energy independence.
