Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has called on transport operators and commuters to handle government-owned transport assets responsibly, emphasising that such property belongs to all citizens.
Her appeal comes amid rising concerns over a shortage of commercial vehicles, which has led to overcrowding and, in some cases, the exploitation of passengers.
Speaking during a stakeholder engagement with management and staff of Metro Mass Transit Limited on Friday, January 16, the Vice President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing a smooth, efficient, and reliable public transport system.
She urged staff to prioritise proper maintenance of buses, noting that careful upkeep is essential to prolonging vehicle lifespan and ensuring consistent service delivery.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang also highlighted the government’s readiness to retool Metro Mass and provide additional buses to support operations, stressing that even older vehicles can remain functional when properly maintained.
“Government is willing to play its role to retool Metro Mass and to supply even more buses. And as time goes on, yes, 10 years is a long time, but we also know we live in a country where even older vehicles can function. Let us take good care of the property that comes from the government because that is all of us,” she emphasised.
