The West African Examinations Council has pushed back against widespread reports suggesting that the results of more than 34,000 students have been blocked because of cheating in the recent exams.
WAEC’s Public Affairs Department explained that no such announcement has been made, and any figures currently in circulation are not from the Council. The clarification comes after online portals circulated claims that tens of thousands of candidates were under investigation.
According to the Council, its team is still reviewing incidents recorded during the examinations, and no final decisions or detailed statistics have been released. WAEC says its monitoring personnel were deployed across the country to track compliance, and although some misconduct was detected, the Council insists the numbers being reported publicly are fabricated.
The misinformation being shared online alleged that thousands of candidates were being sanctioned for offences such as impersonation, collusion, and use of prohibited materials. WAEC has described those claims as speculative.
The examinations body is urging students, parents and schools to ignore unofficial messages and wait for communication issued directly through WAEC’s own platforms. It added that only when its Examinations Committee completes its assessments will any legitimate information regarding withheld results be made public.
