A screengrab showing the officer and the driver in a heated altercation
A violent confrontation broke out between some suspected task force officers, and a commercial bus driver plus his bus conductor (mate) at Kejetia in Kumasi over the alleged overcharging of passenger fares.
An eyewitness explained that the driver and his ‘mate’ were collecting GH₵15 as fare from Kejetia to Macro, despite the approved rate being GH₵3.70p.
In a video shared on X on Friday, January 16, 2026, the eyewitness said the officers intervened, insisting that even if adjustments were made, the fare should not exceed GH₵5.
“They were charging GH₵15 from Kejetia to Macro. The officers told them the fare was too high and that since the approved rate is GH₵3.70p, they could at least charge GH₵5,” the eyewitness recounted.
However, the driver and his ‘mate’ reportedly refused to comply, forcing one of the officers to ask passengers to get off the vehicle.
The eyewitness added that those in the front seat disembarked first, while the officer entered the vehicle and sat at the front seat to prevent the driver from moving, allowing the remaining passengers to also get down.
“When the driver and his mate refused to reduce the fare, one officer entered the vehicle and asked passengers to get down. Those in the front seat got off, and the officer sat there to prevent the driver from moving,” the eyewitness added.
The situation then escalated when the driver, angered by the intervention, allegedly punched the officer.
The officer retaliated, and another officer joined in, allegedly assaulting both the driver and his ‘mate.’
“As more passengers began to leave, the driver became angry and punched the officer, who retaliated. Another officer then joined in and started beating both the driver and his mate,” the eyewitness narrated.
The incident reflects ongoing tensions over transport fares in parts of Ghana, where passengers have repeatedly complained about arbitrary increases by some drivers due to the unavailability of enough cars, particularly during peak work hours.
