A lot of chaotic scenes were witnessed at the ongoing demolition exercise in the Greater Accra Region by the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the region.
The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) exercise was no exception, as some residents of Tema were captured on video clashing with the taskforce conducting the demolition.
One of the viral videos from one of the clashes captured residents who were protesting the destruction of their structures, mobbing the Mayor of TMA, Ebi Bright.
Policemen, who were with the mayor, could be seen pushing back some of the men who were confronting her.
Ebi Bright could also be heard cautioning the leaders of the committee to call their boys to order.
She explained that she came to the demolition site to ensure that only illegal residences were demolished and not businesses.
“That is not why I’m not moving from here; I have protection… What we agreed on was that we cannot allow all these houses and the rest, but arrange your shops. If you are doing commercial activities, we are giving you guidelines to arrange it, but as for houses, you cannot sleep here,” she said.
The community members accepted the position of the mayor and requested more time to move their belongings before their houses are demolished.
The MCE went on to grant their request, ordering the taskforce to give them more time before going on with the exercise.
