- Wontumi insists backing Bawumia first is essential for the party to reclaim power from the NDC
Bernard Antwi Boasiko, widely recognized as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has asserted that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is destined to assume the presidency on the party’s ticket before any other aspirant can.
Speaking to party delegates in Atwuma, Wontumi drew comparisons with U.S. politics, highlighting how figures like Joe Biden supported Barack Obama before eventually taking leadership themselves. He suggested that NPP members should view Bawumia’s journey similarly, acknowledging his precedence within the party.
He further elaborated that if past party members had fully backed previous leaders, the succession within the NPP might have unfolded differently. He stressed that supporting Bawumia first would lay the foundation for other aspirants to achieve their ambitions in subsequent terms.
Dr. Bawumia ran as the NPP’s presidential candidate in the December 2024 elections but lost to the NDC’s John Dramani Mahama. He is now seeking the party’s flagbearer position for the 2025 general elections.
Currently, five notable NPP figures are contesting for the 2028 flagbearer race: former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, former General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong, former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former Agriculture Minister Dr. Bryan Acheampong.
Chairman Wontumi emphasized that all aspiring leaders must be prepared to rally behind Bawumia first to secure victory for the NPP before their own presidential goals can materialize. The party has scheduled its presidential primaries for January 31, 2026, where delegates will vote in secret to choose the eventual flagbearer.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP has declared that no member of the party with presidential ambitions will ever become president unless Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia becomes president first.
